Tubular Bells

Release date: 8th June 2009

Mike Oldfield is an artist like no other. Over the last 37 years he has produced timeless, unique and inspirational music that has enthralled listeners the world over. Fans old and new can celebrate the great man?s work with a special release of his classic, multiplatinum selling album Tubular Bells, out on 8th June through the Mercury Music Group/Universal Music Catalogue. This is the first classic album to be released from Oldfield?s back catalogue, which was transferred from Virgin to Mercury/Universal in 2008. It is 35 years since the opening passage was used in the film THE EXORCIST, making the album a global phenomenon.


This exciting new version of his 1973 groundbreaking album will not only be repackaged, but Mike himself has also remastered the tracks from his home in the Bahamas. There will be FOUR physical editions of the album, as well as TWO digital versions.

All versions will carry a new 2009 stereo mix of the album. The DELUXE EDITION has a 5.1 mix, while the boxed ULTIMATE EDITION, complete with 60 page hardback book with a foreword by Mike Oldfield, poster, plectrums and all manner of Tubular delights, contains all of this as well as previously unheard demo and rough mixes of this epochal recording. There will 500 of these superb, limited editions available through www.mikeoldfield.com signed and numbered. For those who like things old school, there is a vinyl version being released as part of the acclaimed Back To Black series.


There will also be a double disc edition of the album with a bonus disc of Oldfield?s biggest hits between 1974 and 1983. This edition will be extensively advertised on TV.


To celebrate the release, on June 6th at 6pm (6.6.6pm) a worldwide bell ringing event will take place. Bells will be rung in Milan (MTV), Berlin (at Siegessaule, the location were Mike performed the legendary millennium bell concert on New Years Eve Y2K), Brussells (Atomium), Paris (the George Pompidou centre), Sydney (Opera House), Japan/Narita (at one of the traditional Japanese Temples) and finally London, where bells will be rung on at famous landmarks. Footage will then be shown on Mike?s website.

Mike Oldfield song in BBC2 Amazon series

The Songs For Survival album accompanying BBC2 new TV series Amazon will feature an exclusive song by Mike Oldfield. The theme of the series is performed by Apparatjik composed of Guy Berryman (Coldplay), Magne Furuholmen (a-ha) and Jonas Bjerre (Mew). It starts on september 22.

The exclusive launch for Mike Oldfield?s new album release "Music Of The Spheres" will take place this Friday, 7th March at the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao. The launch event will include a world premiere of the entire album with full orchestra, full choir and Hayley Westenra. The event is guestlist only.

The audio from the premiere will be recorded for an UK iTunes exclusive to promote the album from March 17th. Other countries around the world are also making this available to purchase via iTunes or other digital retailers.

Mike Oldfield and his wife Fanny are pleased to announce the birth of their son Eugene. Eugene was born in the early morning on 20/1/2008, and the couple are overjoyed.

Mike said
"We re so happy, it s the most wonderful thing to have Eugene in the world. It?s been an unusual time recently, as we are staying at our holiday home in Spain, so this is just fantastic. We re going to be busy over the next few weeks and months!"

This is the couple s second child after Jake who is three, and they are currently splitting their time between Monaco and their second house in Spain. Mike Oldfield has recently been working on his new album Music of the Spheres, which is due for release in March.

Tommorow (thursday) 27 December there will be an interview with Mike Oldfield on the Dutch TV program "Top 2000 a gogo".
The program will start at 19:30 pm GMT + 1 time on Dutch channel "Nederland 3".
This TV program is directly linked to the 2000 top hits which is played on Dutch radio 2 every year.

If you miss the program, there is another rerun of the program, at 0:15 am GMT+1 time (28 December).

Eigentlich ist es witzig nachdem die neue CD in P2P Tauschbörsen bereits "verbrannt" ist, andererseits halte ich es für einen echten Meilenstein:

Für UK hat Classics and Jazz tatsächlich "On My Heart" als DRM freien MP3 Download im Shop. Geht aber nur wenn eure Kreditkarte in UK angemeldet ist. Aber ich gehe davon aus, das auch Deutschland bald dabei sein wird.

Nachdem die Musikindustrie die letzten Jahre rumgeirrt ist - und anstatt vernünftiger Angebote lieber Kopiergeschütze gegen die Konsumenten entwickelt hat - finde ich diesen Schritt jetzt sehr bemerkenswert und löblich.

Vor ein paar Tagen hat bereits die Deutsche Grammophon einen MP3 Shop auf die Beine gestellt der seines gleichen sucht. Sensationelles Angebot des gesamten (?) Katalogs als MP3.

Die Preise sind einigermaßen günstig - fast alle Titel sind anspielbar und das Produkt welches gekauft wird ist ein MP3 in hoher Qualität. Es geht doch! Glückwunsch! Unbedingt reinschauen:

Da kommt in mir wieder der Ruf nach einer Kulturflatrate hoch.

Ich würde einen Flat - MP3 Account auf meinen Namen und begrenzt auf meine Netztwerkkarte - von mir aus gekoppelt mit dem Provider - auch mit spezieller Software um das alles auf Künstlerseite abrechnen zu können sofort zustimmen und im Monat 10 Euro bezahlen. Von mir aus auch einen 2 Jahresvertrag zeichnen.

Dann würde ich - nicht nur ich - mehr Geld für Musik ausgeben als bisher.

Dabei müssen keine teuren Studien in Auftrag gegeben zu werden denn eines ist klar:

Der Großteil der Konsumenten liebt Musik, sie identifizieren sich mit dieser gesündesten Droge die es gibt. Und sie sind bereit auch Geld dafür auszugeben. Musikkonsumenten sind keine Kriminellen.

Sie wollen ja, aber man lässt sie nicht - oder nur sehr umständlich - das im angemessenen Rahmen zu honorieren was sie bewundern.

Dabei spreche ich nicht von den statistikverfälschenden Datenstaubsaugern die Terrabytes Daten auf der Festplatte haben müssen. Das gabs früher auch schon - aber geschadet haben diese Menschen noch keinen.

Der Start des Grammophon MP3 Shops ist für mich ein Meilenstein und ich hoffe das so einige Denkansätze von mir schnell umgesetzt werden.

Ich freue mich drauf und wünsche der Musikindustrie viel Mut und endlich mal wieder einen Arsch in der Hose. Offensichtlich gibt es doch ein paar Entscheidungsträger die diesen besitzen.

Heute lief in der ARD im Boulevardmagazin "Brisant" ein ca. dreiminütiger Bericht über Mike als er in Berlin war.

Mike Oldfield verlässt Heimat wegen Rauchverbots 

Der britische Popmusiker und Komponist Mike Oldfield (54) ist nach Spanien gezogen, weil ihm die vielen Vorschriften in seiner Heimat Großbritannien auf die Nerven gehen. Insbesondere das strikte Rauchverbot gehe zu weit, sagte er der Zeitung Mail on Sunday.

Stellen Sie sich vor, Winston Churchill hätte 50 Pfund (72 Euro) Geldstrafe zahlen müssen, weil er seine Zigarre geraucht hat. Das hätte er nie hingenommen, sagte Oldfield, der mit Songs wie Moonlight Shadow (1983, gesungen von Maggie Reilly) und Pictures In The Dark (1985) berühmt wurde. Sein malerisches Anwesen in der Grafschaft Gloucestershire soll für 3,5 Millionen Pfund verkauft werden.

Possible Music of the Spheres world premiere concert 

Universal Music Spain is working for organizing a world premiere concert of Music of the Spheres in a spanish city.

Mike Oldfield would have accepted the proposal and it is possible the participation of Hayley Westenra and Lang Lang too.

There is not official confirmation at the moment.

Nicht nur Youngster, auch "Oldies" präsentieren diese Tage ihre neuen Werke: Wie ein Prophet breitet er die Arme über das Mischpult, das so breit ist wie zwei Pianos nebeneinander. Mike Oldfield, 53, stellt einer Handvoll Journalisten seine neue CD vor. "Music of the Spheres".

In den Teldex-Studios in Berlin Lichterfelde wurde früher berühmte Orchester für die Plattenfirmen Telefunken und Teldec Classic aufgenommen. Während in der Küche seine schwangere Frau und sein dreijähriger Sohn Malbücher ausfüllen, erzählt Oldfield wie er in monatelanger Feinarbeit die verschiedenen Tonspuren zu einem stimmigen Ganzen verbunden hat, wie er einen exzellenten Pianisten gesucht hat und Lang Lang gefunden hat, wie er einst zufällig in Leonard Bernstein gerannt ist und wie schwer es ihm fällt, Titel für seine Kompositionen zu finden.

Ob die Aufnahmen jemals wieder so gut klingen wie aus den riesigen Studioboxen, ist zweifelhaft. Schade eigentlich, trotzdem sehr hörenswert, wer Klassik mag.

On Tuesday 18th September, Mike Oldfield spoke about Tubular Bells in 6 Music Plays It Again, half hour in music program documentary lovingly picked from the BBC Archives in BBC Radio 6 Music.

To complement the new series of Stuart Maconie's 7 Days that Rocked the World currently running on Radio 2, here is a chance to hear some of the highlights of the previous series. On Monday 17th September it's the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival, on Tuesday it's Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, on Wednesday it's The Sex Pistols v Bill Grundy and on Thursday it's Saturday Night Fever.

MOTS Präsentation in Berlin 18.09.07 

"Music Of The Spheres" wird am 9. November 2007 in Deutschland veröffentlicht, dies jedoch voraussichtlich nur als CD, nicht in Form des USB-Sticks.Am kommenden Dienstag, den 18.09.2007, wird das Album in Berlin offiziell vorgestellt, Oldfield selber wird jedoch nicht mit von der Partie sein. Informationen hierzu auf Yellow Lounge.

Ein Premierenkonzert ist nicht geplant, gleiches gilt für Fernsehauftritte. Des weiteren wird es keine Single-Auskopplung geben. Die Promotion soll teilweise über Kulturmagazine im TV erfolgen. "

Uoahhhhhhhhhh.

Das Teil haut mir die Beine Weg. Eine unheimlich spannendes etwas schnelleres Grundthema mit stakkato - gestrichenen Geigen; die Kommentare am Anfang kommen von Mike Oldfields Nylon Gitarre mit der berühmten und unverwechselbaren Anschlagsdynamik Mike Oldfields.

Die ganzen Minuten gibt es über ein wahres Feuerwerk an verschiedenen Instrumenten die etwas zu sagen haben. Auch im tiefen bassbereich des Orchesters ist sehr viel Dynamik; super Aufnahme! Sau Spannend - saugut!

Bis das ganze in einem wahnsinnigen Finale mündet.

Der absolute Hammer.

Das erste mal seit vielen Jahren hänge ich an einem neuen Track fest.
Ich spule das Ding schon das 10te Mal zurück, obwohl ich den Rest der CD noch garnicht kenne!

Hurrah! Das Feuer ist wieder da!

it is fantastic. The Main-Theme of the song is played from fast stakkato violins, there are much "comments" from other instruments - the nylon guitar of mike with this brilliant attack for Example.

Yes, It is very good, the bass theme of the orchester ist very impressive and in a very good sound. There are much dramatical orchestral moments on it, with very much power

The first time since years that i rewind one song 10 times - to hear it again.
In a moment where i didnt know the rest of the cd in my Player.
There are many (nylon) guitars on the rest of the CD.

There are much very good parts with much to hear (i mean there are very much details to hear it very often)

Some pieces are very dramatic, some are quite peace.

It is a very very good production (sound, mix) very good voices.

And: I like it very much! We have to thank Mike Oldfield for that.

There were drops in my eyes when i first hear it.
That is a very good sign ;-)

In England wurden 2,2 Millionen CDs Tubular Bells 1 verschenkt [UPDATE]

Tubular Bells wurde vor einigen Tagen an ca. 2.2 Millionen Abonenten der "The Mail on Sunday" kostenlos beigelegt.

Mike Oldfield hat sich gestern bei BBC Radio 4 dazu geäussert. Oldfield wurde demzufolge erst wenige Tage vor Veröffentlichung kontaktiert. Der Vertrag für Tubular Bells wurde 1973 für 35 Jahre unterschrieben.

Er kann sehr gut nachvollziehen, dass einige Live Tracks als giveaway verschenkt werden.

"..aber ein ganzes Album als Zeitungsbeilage zu verschenken, da war 1973 garnicht dran zu denken... " Für Mike Oldfield wäre für diese Aktion ein "neuer Vertrag" nötig gewesen.

(Über zwei Millionen verschenkte Exemplare sind ja auch kein Pappenstiel wenn man bedenkt daß Tubular Bells seit 1973 etwa 2.5 Millionen mal (UK) verkauft wurde.)
